Germany Enforces Strict Vehicle Inspection and Facility Maintenance Deadlines

German law mandates regular inspections and documentation for both technical installations and road vehicles. The Betriebssicherheitsverordnung (BetrSichV) requires facility operators to conduct risk assessments and follow prescribed testing intervals – for example, elevators must undergo a main inspection every two years, while electrical installations are typically checked annually. Failure to comply can result in fines up to €20,000 and unlimited civil liability.

For motor vehicles, the Hauptuntersuchung (HU) – commonly known as the TÜV check – must be performed within the month indicated on the vehicle’s inspection sticker. The ADAC notes that any delay constitutes an administrative offence. Fines range from €15 for a delay of up to two months, to €75 plus a point on the driver’s record for delays exceeding eight months. Additional costs may arise from the required re‑inspection. Both sets of regulations stress that neglecting these obligations can lead to financial penalties and legal consequences.
