Germany enforces strict vehicle inspection deadlines and fines

In Germany, all motor vehicles must pass the Hauptuntersuchung (HU), commonly known as the TÜV, at set intervals – typically every 24 months after an initial 36‑month period. The due month is indicated on a sticker on the licence plate, and the inspection must be completed within that month; there is no official grace period.

If the deadline is missed, drivers incur monetary penalties that increase with the length of the overrun. For passenger cars, motorcycles and light trailers, fines are €15 after two months, €25 after four to eight months, and €60 plus one penalty point after more than eight months. Heavy‑vehicle safety checks have higher fines, ranging up to €75 and a point after eight months. Overdue inspections also trigger a supplementary examination, which adds an extra 20 % charge to the service fee.
