Germany strengthens civil protection and crisis preparedness
German authorities are intensifying efforts to prepare citizens and municipalities for various crisis scenarios, including power outages, floods, and potential military conflicts. The Federal Office of Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK) has released a guide titled ‘Vorsorgen für Krisen und Katastrophen’ (Preparing for Crises and Disasters), which recommends that households maintain at least a 10-day supply of food and water. The BBK suggests having non-electric cooking methods, such as gas stoves, and tools like crank-powered radios and lamps to maintain communication and basic needs.
In the city of Trier, local officials are coordinating with the military, police, and fire services to develop contingency plans for maintaining essential services like electricity and communication during wartime or large-scale emergencies. This includes the potential reactivation of an office for food security to manage food rationing via coupons, similar to systems used in the past. These measures follow recent challenges from extreme weather, such as heatwaves and floods, as well as emerging security threats like drone incursions.
