Germany enhances disaster preparedness through exercises and community education
Disaster preparedness and civil protection efforts are being emphasized in Germany through both administrative exercises and community education programs.
In Pfaffenhofen, the district office conducted a large-scale staff exercise to test coordination and communication during a simulated crisis involving a major disruption to the drinking water supply. The drill included representatives from the Bavarian Red Cross, the police, the Technical Relief Agency (THW), the Bundeswehr, and local fire departments. The exercise focused on decision-making processes, situational assessment under pressure, and public relations during emergencies.
In Warendorf, the city and the Adult Education Center (VHS) have launched a collaborative event series titled ‘Together Safe’. Running from January to April 2026, the program aims to increase public awareness regarding emergency preparedness and civil protection. The seven-module series covers topics such as first aid, fire protection, personal emergency supplies, and ways for citizens to engage in volunteer work to support local emergency services.
