Germany enjoys high approval in Arab nations, study finds

A study commissioned by the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung reveals that Germany maintains a high reputation in several Arab nations. Approval ratings are particularly strong in Syria at 73 percent and Tunisia at 70 percent. In Syria, a relative majority of 27 percent identified German Chancellor Friedrich Merz as the European leader with the best Middle East policy.

Regarding regional security, Israel was identified as the greatest threat to the region by relative majorities in Lebanon (67 percent), Jordan (62 percent), Syria (57 percent), Tunisia (45 percent), the Palestinian territories (41 percent), and Egypt (40 percent).

The survey also noted a decline in support for a two-state solution among younger populations. In the Palestinian territories, only about one-third of respondents under the age of 30 support the model, compared to 62 percent of those older than 30.

The research was conducted via telephone between May 8 and July 3, 2026, surveying 8,475 individuals across Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, the Palestinian territories, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.
