Germany establishes pandemic inquiry commission amid rising COVID-19 activity
In Germany, an Enquete-Kommission (inquiry commission) consisting of 14 members of parliament and 14 external experts is working to analyze the COVID-19 pandemic and prepare for future health crises. The commission aims to improve risk assessment, early detection, and crisis management, with a final report due by late June 2027. This initiative follows long-standing calls for a comprehensive review of the pandemic response.
Simultaneously, health officials are monitoring rising COVID-19 activity in both the United States and Germany. In the US, the CDC has noted increased infection rates in 27 states, potentially linked to Omicron variants such as SW.2 and XFG.1.1. While some patients have reported unusually severe sore throats, experts from the Yale School of Medicine note there is no documented evidence that newer variants cause more intense throat pain than previous ones, and symptoms often overlap with the common cold.
