Germany expands electric vehicle charging infrastructure
Germany is seeing a significant expansion in public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure. Data from the Federal Network Agency, analyzed by the energy company 1Komma5°, shows that public charging points increased by approximately 24 percent compared to the previous year, reaching over 209,000 registered points by September 2026.
Regional developments vary across the country. Stuttgart remains the leader in charging density with 2,107 points per 100 square kilometers. In Bavaria, Regensburg and Munich rank highly, while the town of Schwabach reported the largest growth at 112 percent. In Hamburg, the number of public charging points has more than doubled over the last two years, reaching nearly 6,000 points.
Infrastructure improvements are also targeting highways and high-speed charging. EnBW has opened a new high-power charging park in Karlsruhe capable of providing up to 480 kilowatts of power. Additionally, the Autobahn GmbH is expanding fast-charging options at unmanaged rest areas in Thuringia, with plans to establish 56 fast-charging points at various highway parking lots by the end of the year.
