Germany EV charging market sees Shell upgrades and EVN acquisition
Major shifts are occurring in the German electric vehicle (EV) charging market as companies restructure their infrastructure investments.
Shell is modernizing its 'Shell Recharge' network, upgrading 150 fast-charging points across more than 40 locations in Germany with new hardware. The company aims to increase technical stability and availability, with plans to add at least 50 more charging points by the end of the year. This modernization effort focuses on replacing older systems to ensure more reliable charging processes for customers.
In a separate strategic move, the Austrian utility provider EVN has acquired 100 percent of BayWa Mobility Charging. The deal includes 30 locations and 170 fast-charging points, some offering up to 400 kW, primarily located in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and North Rhine-Westphalia. This acquisition marks EVN's entry into the German market, with plans to expand the network to 306 charging points by 2027. For BayWa, the sale is part of a restructuring process to move away from capital-intensive asset ownership toward service and sales.
