Germany expands A8 motorway with wildlife bridge and infrastructure upgrades
Significant infrastructure developments are underway on the A8 motorway in Germany. In the Pforzheim region, the 'Hagenschieß' green bridge has been inaugurated to facilitate wildlife movement. The 64-meter-long and 53-meter-wide structure, built at a cost of approximately 11 million euros, connects forest areas in the Black Forest Nature Park that were previously separated by the highway. The bridge features 20,000 cubic meters of soil and native vegetation to create a natural corridor, with protective walls to shield animals from light and traffic noise.
Simultaneously, construction progress is being made on the A8 Albaufstieg expansion project near Göppingen. This 1.4 billion euro federal project aims to reroute a 7.6-kilometer section of the motorway between Mühlhausen and Hohenstadt to reduce steepness and shorten the route. The expansion includes the construction of two tunnels and two new bridges. While preparatory work and ground investigations are currently ongoing, the project represents a major effort to modernize the corridor connecting Stuttgart and Ulm.
