Germany expands bicycle streets to improve urban mobility
Bicycle streets are increasingly being established in German city centers to make cycling safer and more attractive. These areas are primarily reserved for cyclists, providing fast and secure routes to encourage more frequent bicycle use in urban environments.
From an environmental perspective, the shift from motorized vehicles to bicycles can reduce CO2 emissions and air pollution. According to the German Environment Agency (Umweltbundesamt), commuting to work by bicycle could save approximately 310 kilograms of CO2 emissions annually per person.
Bicycle streets are identified by specific traffic signs under the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), specifically sign 244, which features a white bicycle in a blue circle on a white background with the addition ‘Fahrradstraße’. The end of such a street is marked by a similar grey sign with a crossed-out bicycle.
