Germany expands blood donation eligibility and launches donor campaign
To address rising demand and a shortage of donors, the age limit for blood donation in Germany was lifted in 2023. Health professionals, including Kristina Hölig of the German Society for Transfusion Medicine and Immunohaematology, state that age is not the deciding factor; rather, an individual's overall health and ability to tolerate the donation are critical.
As the population ages, the need for blood products increases, yet only about three percent of the population donates regularly. To encourage participation, the DRK Blood Donor Service Baden-Württemberg – Hessen is launching a campaign from September 28 to November 27, 2026. The initiative, titled ‘Leben retten hat Style’, offers exclusive Happy Socks to individuals who donate blood alongside a first-time donor.
Donors are advised to be honest about medical history, medications, and previous surgeries. Regulations for whole blood donations allow men to donate up to six times and women up to four times per year.
