Germany expands child allowance for low‑income families

Germany's Kinderzuschlag (child allowance) provides up to €297 per child each month to families whose earnings are insufficient to cover the household's needs. Eligibility requires that parents receive child benefit, earn at least €600 (single parent) or €900 (couple) gross per month, and do not receive basic security benefits. The child's own income, such as alimony or a survivor's pension, is counted at 45 % toward the allowance.

Effective 1 July 2026, assets are only considered when they exceed €55,000 for a two‑person household (plus €15,000 for each additional member). Income and asset assessments cover the previous six months, with forecasts used for fluctuating earnings. Recipients also gain access to the Education and Participation Package, including free school meals, a €195 annual school supplies grant, and possible reimbursement of transport costs. Applications are submitted online to the Familienkasse, are generally approved for six months, and must be updated after any change in circumstances to avoid repayment or sanctions.
