Germany expands commercial zones for small and medium enterprises

The city of Kaiserslautern and its development partner WVE GmbH broke ground on July 29 for the expansion of the Nordost industrial district. The project will create about 60,000 m² of new commercial land, allowing roughly 20 new sites for small and medium‑sized firms and craft businesses. Mayor Beate Kimmel highlighted the move as a positive signal for the local economy, while WVE CEO Peter Nonnemacher said the development aims to provide modern, sustainably built spaces for many smaller operators rather than a single large player.

In parallel, the neighbouring cities of Wuppertal and Sprockhövel have begun planning a joint commercial area on the Schmiedestraße near the A46 highway. Covering roughly 153 ha, the site is still in an early stage, with ecological and traffic impact studies underway and coordination between regional planning authorities required. The initiative, part of Wuppertal’s 2024 commercial‑land program, is intended primarily for medium‑sized enterprises rather than large logistics centers. Both projects reflect a broader effort in Germany to increase available Gewerbeflächen for SMEs in response to long‑standing demand.
