Germany sees record EV registrations and charging point growth
Germany is experiencing a significant surge in electric vehicle (EV) adoption and infrastructure. In September, battery electric vehicle (BEV) registrations reached a record 88,599 units, representing a 34.5 percent market share. This nearly twofold increase compared to the previous year is attributed to high fuel prices and a government subsidy program that has already supported 100,000 applicants. While hybrid vehicles maintain the largest overall market share at 38.5 percent, registrations for traditional gasoline and diesel vehicles have declined sharply.
To support this transition, the public charging network is expanding rapidly. As of September 1, there were over 209,000 registered public charging points in Germany, a 24 percent increase since July 2025. Stuttgart leads in charging density, while regions like Mettmann and Schwabach have seen significant growth. Additionally, new regulations have cleared the way for two-way charging, allowing EV owners to sell electricity back to the grid.
In political developments, Jochen Flasbarth is stepping down as State Secretary in the Federal Ministry for the Environment to join the European Climate Foundation. He will be succeeded by Heike Henn.
