Germany expands school sports and all-day education programs

Germany is seeing a significant shift in educational structures through the expansion of all-day schooling and integrated sports programs. The German Football Association (DFB) recently concluded its ‘Year of School’ initiative, marked by the DFB School Cup 2026 in Frankfurt. The program aims to foster long-term cooperation between schools, local clubs, and regional associations to increase physical activity among youth.

The DFB reported a record high for its ‘Gemeinsam am Ball’ program, with over 1,200 football working groups registered in cooperation with schools—a 27 percent increase from the previous year. The association plans to continue its school football tours and strengthen ties with professional clubs to ensure sports remain a consistent part of the school day.

Parallel to these sports initiatives, a nationwide legal entitlement to all-day schooling at primary schools has taken effect. Schools like the Bonifatiusschule in Bad Salzschlirf are already managing high demand, with approximately 70 percent of parents utilizing extended hours. These programs include dedicated homework assistance and learning support, funded in part by the ‘Startchancen-Programm’ to promote educational equality and support working parents.
