Germany expands senior and low‑income public‑transport discount schemes

In Germany, seniors can receive discounts of at least 10 % at many venues, including rail, local transport, museums and cinemas, but there is no nationwide senior‑discount law. Discounts vary by provider, age threshold (often 60 or 65) and proof required, such as a pension card issued by the Deutsche Rentenversicherung. The Deutsche Bahn offers a Senior BahnCard 25 with a 25 % discount on flexible fares and a Senior BahnCard 50 with a 50 % discount on those fares.

A separate analysis by the Paritätischer Wohlfahrtsverband shows that recipients of Wohngeld (housing benefit) may obtain discounted “social tickets” for public transport, but the availability is fragmented. Some federal states – Hamburg, Hessen, Nordrhein‑Westfalen – provide a nationwide Deutschlandticket Social ranging from €22.50 to €48 per month, while other states offer only municipal schemes with prices between €15 and €53. Over half of the surveyed districts have no social‑ticket offering at all.
