Germany expands solar thermal systems as Czech village reports e‑waste recycling benefits

In Germany, homeowners are increasingly adding solar thermal collectors alongside existing photovoltaic panels. The technology converts sunlight directly into heat for domestic hot water, space heating or pool warming, with reported instantaneous efficiencies of up to 90 percent under optimal test conditions. While the high peak efficiency is not typical year‑round, the combined use of electricity‑generating PV and heat‑producing thermal collectors offers a diversified renewable energy solution.

In the Czech municipality of Vidov, a partnership with the collective waste‑management system ASEKOL has enabled the collection and recycling of used electrical appliances. The 2025 environmental accounting shows that the returned devices saved 27.3 MWh of electricity, avoided 2 519 L of crude oil, conserved 233 m³ of water and prevented 13.38 t of CO₂‑equivalent emissions, among other resource savings. The initiative demonstrates how circular‑economy practices can generate measurable environmental benefits at the local level.
