Germany expands vacation subsidies and special allowances for Bürgergeld recipients

German social‑security law provides additional needs (Mehrbedarfe) on top of the basic Bürgergeld and Sozialhilfe entitlements. These cover situations such as pregnancy, single parenting, disability, decentralized hot‑water systems and costly nutrition, and are stipulated in § 21 SGB II and § 30 SGB XII. The allowances are calculated as percentages of the standard rates and may be granted regularly or as one‑off benefits, with specific amounts varying by family composition and need.

Separate from the basic benefit, several German states offer vacation subsidies for low‑income families receiving Bürgergeld. The aid is not a nationwide flat rate but depends on regional programmes. For example, Niedersachsen combines a base grant of up to €15 per night with extra payments for single parents or disabled members, potentially reaching around €40 per day. Other states such as Bayern, Berlin, Brandenburg and Bremen have their own schemes, typically covering a limited number of nights and varying per‑night amounts. Families are urged to apply through state agencies, welfare associations or charitable foundations rather than the Jobcenter.
