Germany and Russia exchange diplomatic expulsions after Leipzig airport sabotage plot
Diplomatic relations between Germany and Russia have escalated into a crisis following a sabotage attempt at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4. German authorities concluded an investigation determining that a drone loaded with explosives found at the airport was a deliberate attempt orchestrated by Russia.
In response, the German government announced the closure of the Russian Consulate General in Bonn and the Russian House in Berlin. Germany has also ordered approximately 150 Russian diplomats and their families to leave the country. Moscow has denied the allegations, claiming Germany provided no concrete evidence and is attempting to sever cultural ties.
Russia has retaliated by ordering the closure of the German Consulate in St. Petersburg and the local branch of the Goethe Institute. Consequently, Germany’s diplomatic presence in Russia is now limited to its embassy in Moscow and remaining consular operations. Amidst these tensions, the Russian agency Rossotrudnichestvo announced plans to expand its cultural influence by opening new centers in several African nations, Thailand, and Armenia.
