Germany extends cycling safety initiatives amid rising accident concerns

Authorities in Germany are intensifying efforts to improve cycling safety following high accident rates. The German Road Safety Council (DVR), in collaboration with accident insurance funds and professional associations, has extended its focus campaign, ‘Safe Cycling Mobility on Work and Service Routes,’ through December 31, 2026. This initiative provides guidance on the safe use of bicycles, pedelecs, and e-bikes, covering topics such as visibility, helmet use, blind spots, and proper lane usage.

Data from Destatis indicates that 441 cyclists died in road traffic in Germany in 2024, with over 93,000 accidents resulting in personal injury. Additionally, the German Statutory Accident Insurance (DGUV) recorded more than 34,000 accidents involving e-bikes and bicycles during work or service commutes in the same year.

Concerns regarding youth safety are also prominent. An ADAC Foundation survey reveals that while 96 percent of children aged 4 to 12 can ride a bike, many lack essential safety skills. Approximately 38 percent of children aged 7 to 9 cannot perform a shoulder check or ride safely with one hand. Even among 10- to 12-year-olds, over 20 percent lack these critical abilities, which teachers note can lead to significant attention deficits in traffic.
