Germany faces deficits in EU asylum system implementation
The implementation of the Common European Asylum System (GEAS) is underway, but the European Commission has identified significant deficiencies in Germany’s compliance. According to a May 2026 report, Germany lacks sufficient reception capacity for border procedures at airports and faces technical hurdles regarding the Eurodac database and Frontex digital systems.
EU lawmakers remain divided on the effectiveness of the reform. Birgit Sippel (SPD) noted that member states have begun implementing the package, specifically highlighting that fingerprinting processes appear to be functioning. However, concerns persist regarding the adequacy of accommodation in border camps and whether asylum seekers will maintain consistent access to legal counsel.
