Germany faces demographic crisis in eastern regions

Germany’s eastern regions are facing a severe depopulation spiral following German reunification. Nearly a quarter of former East Germans have moved to western regions or abroad, a migration pattern primarily composed of young, well-educated women.

This exodus has left the eastern part of the country as Germany’s oldest demographic, characterized by some of the lowest birth rates in the nation. In former East Germany, the birth rate has fallen to approximately 1.2 children per woman. This decline has led to the disappearance of local schools, clubs, and community traditions.

While mainstream political parties often frame this demographic collapse as an economic labor shortage to be addressed through mass immigration, many eastern voters view the situation as a loss of cultural identity and social stability. This sense of pessimism and perceived neglect by established politicians has contributed to the rising success of right-wing populist movements in the region.
