Germany faces educational crisis following PISA 2025 results
The results of the PISA 2025 study have prompted calls for significant educational reforms in Germany. Data indicates that over one-third of students are now failing to meet minimum requirements in core competencies, a decline compared to the first PISA study 25 years ago.
In Hessen, the education union GEW Hessen has demanded a major educational offensive, arguing that current budget increases are insufficient to address systemic issues. Thilo Hartmann, chairman of GEW Hessen, noted that the state budget fails to resolve long-standing problems such as teacher shortages, staff overburdening, and deteriorating school infrastructure.
A central concern highlighted by both the study and political observers is the lack of educational equity. In Germany, a student's socio-economic background and parental income play a disproportionately large role in determining academic success compared to other OECD nations. Critics suggest that the current federalist structure of German education policy has hindered cooperative progress, leading to calls for a unified national educational offensive between the federal government and the states.
