Germany gas storage levels hit 15-year low ahead of winter
Germany is facing concerns regarding its natural gas reserves ahead of the winter heating season. The German gas storage association, INES, has warned that storage levels are at a 15-year low, with capacity reported at approximately 53% to 54.5% in early September. This is significantly lower than the 71% recorded during the same period last year.
To reach a target of 77% storage capacity by November 1, Germany must increase its gas injection rate to approximately 1 terawatt hour per day. Current data from Gas Infrastructure Europe indicates that injection rates are currently around 900 gigawatt hours per day. If these rates do not improve, INES estimates that storage levels may only reach 63% by the start of the peak heating period.
Regional variations exist within the country. In Brandenburg, the Rüdersdorf storage facility was reported at 84.8% capacity, which is higher than the national average. However, in Thuringia, storage levels at the Allmenhausen and Kirchheilingen facilities have dropped to 43%.
While Brandenburg's Economy Minister, Martina Klement, stated that there is no immediate threat to the electricity supply or gas availability for the winter, experts warn of vulnerability. In the event of an exceptionally cold winter, the gap between gas supply and demand could reach 25% in January, potentially necessitating increased imports or industrial consumption restrictions.
