Germany faces gas supply pressure amid low storage levels

Germany is facing increased pressure to secure natural gas supplies as storage levels sit at approximately 56 percent, significantly lower than the multi-year average for this period. The current levels represent the lowest recorded for this time of year since monitoring began.

The European gas market is under strain due to geopolitical tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, which has disrupted LNG shipments from major exporters like Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, damage to production facilities has reduced Qatari LNG capacity by roughly 17 percent.

In response, the German state-owned energy company SEFE has increased its storage activities. While the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs maintains that winter preparedness is a market responsibility rather than a government mandate, officials have encouraged SEFE to conduct non-intrusive, incremental purchases to rebuild reserves toward a 70 percent target without triggering extreme price volatility. Despite the low storage levels, the Federal Network Agency currently considers the supply situation to be stable.
