Germany faces historic low in PISA student performance scores

Recent PISA study results indicate that German students have reached a historic low in reading, mathematics, and science competencies. The decline is noted as being more severe than previous 'PISA shocks,' with 20 percent of 15-year-olds across the OECD now classified as low-performing in all three core areas.

In Germany, the crisis is compounded by high rates of students leaving school without qualifications. Data from the INSM-Bildungsmonitor 2026 shows that 18.8 percent of young adults lack a vocational degree. In response to declining literacy, local initiatives like the Fliedetalschule have implemented digital tutoring programs, such as 'Lesen mit dem Turbo-Team,' funded by organizations like the KIWANIS-Club.

Public discourse has intensified, with media figures like Markus Lanz criticizing the government's handling of educational responsibility. Lanz and philosopher Richard David Precht have expressed sharp criticism toward Education Minister Karin Prien, characterizing certain political stances on educational accountability as a form of 'self-abandonment.' Meanwhile, sociologists like Aladin El-Mafaalani suggest the focus should shift from student failings to the societal conditions in which children are growing up.
