Germany faces massive economic losses from 2026 heatwave

The summer of 2026 in Germany has been characterized by extreme heat, prolonged drought, devastating forest fires, and destructive storms. Preliminary estimates suggest the prolonged heat stress has resulted in 16,000 deaths and approximately 36 billion euros in losses for the German economy.

Infrastructure has suffered significant damage due to heat stress, including buckled asphalt on roads and deformed railway tracks, leading to increased maintenance costs. Bene Müller, board member of solarcomplex AG, noted that the climate crisis has transitioned from an ecological issue to a tangible economic one affecting many actors. Experts have raised concerns regarding whether current efforts focus on proactive climate protection or merely reactive repairs to the damage caused by the crisis.
