Germany: 175,000 protest against social welfare and military service reforms

Approximately 175,000 people participated in coordinated protests across 15 German cities on September 26, organized by the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). Demonstrators gathered under the slogan ‘Hard earned. Your work. Your health. Your pension.’ to oppose proposed government cuts to social security, healthcare, and pension systems, as well as changes to working hours and labor rights.

In addition to labor-related protests, significant student mobilization occurred, with an estimated 45,000 young people protesting against potential reintroductions of compulsory military service and new registration laws. These student strikes highlighted opposition to government policies regarding military readiness and domestic security measures.

While union leaders called for the government to take action on infrastructure and energy prices to secure jobs, employers' associations have criticized the unions for rejecting necessary economic reforms.
