Germany faces ongoing loss of historical monuments
The German Foundation for Monument Protection (DSD) has reported a continuous loss of historical monuments across Germany. According to the foundation's new “Black Book of Monument Preservation,” at least 1,077 monuments were lost during 2024 and 2025. The report attributes these losses to factors such as neglect, economic pressures, technical errors, and political failures.
In response to the importance of heritage, the “Day of Open Monuments” is scheduled for September 13, 2026. The city of Bamberg will host the opening of this major cultural event. Local programming in Bamberg will include tours of the Erlöserkirche and demonstrations of sgraffito facade restoration at the Karl-Steinbauer-Haus.
