Germany faces parking tensions near airports and in urban centers
Tensions have escalated in residential areas near Düsseldorf Airport as travelers seek cheaper parking alternatives during the autumn holidays. In Ratingen-Tiefenbroich, residents report significant frustration due to long-term parking by outsiders. The situation turned violent over a weekend in October when unknown individuals deflated the tires of at least twelve vehicles.
Local residents suspect shady parking companies of using residential streets to store client vehicles. Mettmann district police confirmed recurring issues with such companies, noting that vehicles are sometimes used for private trips or illegal street races, and customers have reported receiving damaged cars, empty fuel tanks, or missing valuables. Similar issues are being reported near Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport, where local authorities have implemented signage and parking restrictions to combat the influx of holiday travelers.
In response to urban parking shortages, cities like Stuttgart are exploring 'after-hours parking' models. This concept, already successful in Düsseldorf, allows residents to use supermarket, school, or public facility parking spaces after business hours. Düsseldorf has expanded its program from 190 to approximately 2,000 spaces, integrating supermarket lots, parking garages, and private office buildings into the network.
