Germany faces political litigation surge and security threats
Germany is facing internal challenges regarding the use of the legal system for political purposes and growing external security threats. Political parties and officials are increasingly utilizing lawsuits as a tool for confrontation, moving disputes from public debate to the courtroom. High-profile figures, including Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Robert Habeck, have been targets of litigation involving allegations of racism, antisemitism, or electoral misconduct.
Simultaneously, Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has warned of a ‘shadow war’ of destabilization that he suggests may be more dangerous than the Cold War. While not explicitly naming Russia, his warnings follow intelligence reports regarding potential foreign interference, sabotage, and espionage. This follows a failed drone attack at a German airport in August, which authorities attributed to Russian activity. In response, Berlin is considering legislation to expand the powers of intelligence services, including the BND, to better detect and counter such threats.
