Germany faces projected shortage of 723,000 skilled workers by 2029
Germany is projected to face a significant shortage of approximately 723,000 skilled workers by 2029, nearly doubling the deficit of 370,000 recorded last year. According to projections published by Spiegel, the labor gap is driven primarily by demographic shifts and an aging population.
The most acute shortages are expected in several key sectors. Sales is projected to require an additional 39,100 workers, followed by childcare with a projected deficit of 29,900. Significant gaps are also anticipated in social work and pedagogy (23,600), healthcare and medical care (18,700), and the electrical industry (17,000).
Researcher Alexander Burstede warns that as a large number of current workers enter retirement, the influx of new workers from abroad may not be sufficient to fully offset the loss, potentially widening the gap between labor supply and demand by the end of the decade.
