Germany faces psychotherapy training reforms and funding cuts

Germany is navigating significant changes in the psychotherapy sector, involving both educational reforms and financial austerity measures. A new law regarding psychotherapy training reform and the approved licensing regulations has introduced a clarified social legal status for trainees. Under the new system, trainees receive professional licensure upon completing their studies, which aims to end the previous 'intern status' that allowed some clinics to bypass minimum wage and social security requirements.

However, concerns remain regarding the quality of psychological foundational knowledge provided in these new curricula. Simultaneously, the German Bundestag has approved budget cuts regarding the reimbursement of psychotherapeutic services for adults. While regulations for children and adolescents were eased, the reductions for adult patients have sparked warnings from professionals. Experts suggest that reduced compensation may place economic pressure on private practices, potentially worsening existing long waiting times for adult patients seeking mental health support.
