Germany faces record drug-related deaths amid evolving market

Germany is facing a critical challenge with drug-related fatalities remaining at record levels. In 2025, there were 2,150 drug-related deaths, with more than a quarter of those deceased being under the age of 30.

Prof. Dr. Hendrik Streeck, the Federal Government Commissioner for Addiction and Drug Issues, noted that the drug market is evolving faster than existing regulatory structures. He highlighted the rise of more potent synthetic substances, increased poly-drug use, and the shift of drug distribution into digital spaces via smartphones.

Streeck emphasized the need for a shift toward proactive policy, including the implementation of a national early warning system and addiction assistance that reaches individuals before consumption becomes a life-threatening crisis. He also called for a broader understanding of addiction policy that addresses digital marketing and the accessibility of psychoactive substances to young people.
