Germany faces regional policy shifts over wind energy expansion
German states Saxony and Brandenburg are facing political developments regarding wind energy expansion and regional planning.
In Saxony, the state government issued a directive allowing for the temporary prohibition of certain wind energy projects until the end of 2027 if they significantly impact ongoing regional planning. The VEE Sachsen e. V., an association promoting renewable energies, warned that this could send a negative signal and cause hardship for projects that have undergone years of preparation and investment. Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar stated the measure aims to provide security through timely planning and to prevent the ‘super-privileging’ rule, which could allow wind energy construction in protected areas if planning is not completed.
In Brandenburg, the BSW party failed in its attempt to limit wind energy expansion. A legislative proposal aimed at extending a moratorium and counting existing plants toward federal expansion targets was rejected by a majority of SPD and CDU members in the state parliament. While BSW and AfD representatives criticized the expansion as ‘reckless wild growth’ and ‘land consumption,’ the SPD and CDU advocated for a stable legal framework to support regional planning communities in designating priority areas.
