Germany faces rise in bicycle thefts using superglue tactic
Bicycle theft remains a significant issue in Germany, with the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) reporting 245,868 stolen bicycles in 2024. The clearance rate for these crimes is notably low, at only 9.7 percent.
Authorities are warning of a recurring tactic known as the ‘superglue trick.’ In this method, thieves seal the keyhole of a bicycle lock with superglue. This forces owners to leave their bikes unattended overnight while they attempt to resolve the issue. Under the cover of darkness, criminals then break the locks to steal the bicycles.
In Hamburg, reports have surfaced of this method being used near public transit areas. Experts recommend that owners avoid leaving bicycles unattended overnight and suggest using acetone to remove glue or contacting the police if a lock is tampered with.
