Germany faces rising bankruptcies as UK battles widespread wildfires

Germany is experiencing a high volume of corporate bankruptcies. According to a report from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the number of bankruptcies between August 2025 and July 2026 reached 18,478, an 8.3% year-on-year increase. In July alone, bankruptcies rose by 7% compared to the previous year, exceeding the 2016–2019 average by 75%. Experts suggest that prolonged crises have depleted the reserves of many small businesses, with the peak of this wave potentially occurring in late 2026.

In the United Kingdom, extreme heat has triggered widespread wildfires across England and Wales, prompting a national alert. The fires have caused significant destruction, particularly in Stourbridge, West Midlands, where 19 homes were destroyed and 18 others damaged. Multiple locations, including Carmarthenshire in Wales and the New Forest in Hampshire, are facing ongoing emergencies. The UK government has issued temporary bans on disposable barbecues and prohibited open flames to prevent further outbreaks. Emergency services are currently managing 37 active wildfires across the region.
