Germany reports approximately 12,500 heat-related deaths in 2026
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reports that approximately 12,500 people have died in Germany due to extreme heat between April 6 and August 2, 2026. This figure is considered a conservative estimate, and the actual number may be higher.
Data shows that a significant portion of these fatalities occurred during a severe heatwave in late June, with an estimated 9,600 deaths recorded between June 22 and June 28 alone. The mortality rates were particularly high in the states of Saarland (43.4 per 100,000) and Rhineland-Palatinate (38.7 per 100,000).
Elderly populations are the most vulnerable; approximately 6,300 of the deceased were aged 85 and older. The RKI notes that heat often exacerbates existing health conditions such as cardiovascular, respiratory, and kidney diseases.
In response to the rising death toll, the VdK social association has called for an amendment to the German Basic Law to establish heat protection as a shared responsibility between federal and state governments. Meanwhile, regional authorities are implementing measures such as forest fire monitoring and local heat action plans to mitigate risks.
