Germany faces rising heat risks in communities and schools

Extreme heat and heavy rainfall are driving urgent climate adaptation discussions across Germany. In Ingersheim, a local survey revealed that 93 percent of residents view heatwave adaptation as a high priority. Residents identified town centers and bus stops as particularly hot areas, while green spaces like parks and forests are seen as essential for cooling. Local political factions are exploring funding models, such as corporate sponsorships or the sale of naming rights for playgrounds, to finance shade structures and climate-resilient infrastructure.

In the education sector, the Heinz Trox-Stiftung and News4teachers have documented severe heat stress in classrooms through a nationwide initiative. Over 200 submissions from educators have recorded temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius in some instances. Reports from schools in Hessen, Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, and North Rhine-Westphalia highlight that high temperatures affect various school types and regions, impacting both regular instruction and afternoon childcare. The initiative aims to create a digital heat map to visualize these conditions and advocate for healthier learning environments.
