Germany faces rising poverty risks and potential welfare cuts

In Germany, rising costs for rent, food, and energy are increasingly straining household budgets, even for those in steady employment. For many low-income families, state benefits serve as a critical buffer against poverty and social exclusion.

A proposed legislative change could impact these households by the beginning of 2027. Under the current draft, the €25 immediate supplement (Sofortzuschlag) currently included in the child supplement (Kinderzuschlag) would be eliminated, potentially reducing monthly support for families.

Statistical thresholds for relative poverty in 2025 are determined by household size and the median income. For single individuals, the poverty risk threshold is set at €1,446 net per month, while a household with two adults and two children under 14 faces a threshold of €3,036. Groups such as single parents, retirees, and large families remain at the highest risk of financial instability.
