Germany faces Russian hybrid threats amid domestic political shifts
Germany is facing an escalation in hybrid warfare attributed to Russia, including infrastructure sabotage, drone incursions, and assassination plots. A significant incident occurred on August 4 at Leipzig/Halle airport, where explosive-laden drones struck two aircraft belonging to the Ukrainian cargo carrier Antonov Airlines. While German and US intelligence officials have attributed the attack to Russia, the Kremlin has denied involvement, claiming the evidence was planted to influence German elections.
Simultaneously, Germany's strategic direction faces domestic political challenges. In the Saxony-Anhalt state elections, the populist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party saw a major surge, securing 43.8% of the vote. The AfD's platform opposes military assistance to Ukraine, calls for the removal of sanctions on Russia, and seeks to restore energy ties with Moscow. This shift contrasts with the current government's commitment of approximately 58 billion euros in military aid and 43 billion euros in civilian support since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
