Germany faces severe drought and water extraction bans

Severe drought conditions across Germany have led to critically low groundwater and surface water levels. In Bavaria, the State Office for the Environment reports that 81 percent of near-surface groundwater monitoring stations are recording low to very low levels, a significant increase compared to previous years.

In response to the shortage, local authorities have implemented restrictions. The Miltenberg district has banned water extraction from most streams and rivers, excluding the Main, to combat ongoing dryness. Similarly, the city of Cottbus has issued a ban on water extraction from surface waters, including rivers and lakes, using pumping devices, with the restriction expected to last at least until late September.

The ecological impact is also being felt at Lake Constance, where historic low water levels have dried out shallow reed zones. This has displaced waterfowl and increased tension between wildlife and recreational water sports users as animals are forced into open water areas.
