Germany warns of Russian shadow war aimed at destabilization

German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt has warned that Germany is facing a “shadow war” involving espionage, sabotage, cyberattacks, and disinformation. Speaking at a conference for the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BfV) in Berlin, Dobrindt stated that these hybrid threats aim to destabilize the nation politically and socially rather than through military defeat. He noted that the current threat landscape exceeds the scope of the Cold War.

BfV President Sinan Selen added that Russia is conducting long-term hybrid attacks intended to undermine democratic foundations and social stability. These warnings follow recent incidents, including an August attempt involving an explosives-laden drone at the Leipzig/Halle Airport, which German authorities attributed to Russia.

In response to these escalating threats, the German government is pursuing a reform bill to expand the powers of intelligence services, allowing for more proactive defensive measures. Additionally, the government has adopted a plan to strengthen internal security and improve protection against terrorism and extremism.
