Germany faces shortage in youth mental health and counseling services

Social service organizations in Germany are warning of a growing gap between the rising demand for youth support and the availability of adequate counseling and therapeutic resources. Diakonie Sachsen reports that children and adolescents are facing increased psychological pressure due to academic stress, social conflicts, and the influence of social media, leading to higher rates of anxiety, eating disorders, and school refusal.

Wait times for psychotherapy can reach up to nine months, placing immense pressure on schools, family centers, and counseling services that act as catch-all facilities. Diakonie Sachsen emphasizes that delays in intervention make problems more difficult and costly to resolve.

Complementary reports highlight the necessity of early intervention and digital outreach. Organizations like Condrobs are utilizing 'digital streetwork' to reach youth in anonymous online forums and chat groups. Data from the 'Youth in Germany 2026' study indicates that 29 percent of surveyed young people report needing psychological support, a record high. However, many of these essential services face funding shortages and are increasingly reliant on donations to maintain operations.
