Germany economic outlook shows shrinking labor market and falling consumer sentiment
Germany is experiencing a complex economic landscape characterized by diverging indicators. While the Ifo business climate index rose by 1.1 points to 89.9 in September, signaling a stabilization in the broader economy, the labor market faces significant structural challenges. The IAB predicts a shrinking labor market driven by demographic shifts and declining net migration, with employment projected to decrease by 210,000 in 2026 and 140,000 in 2027.
Consumer sentiment has taken a sharp downturn, with the NIM consumer climate index falling to -30.6 points for October. This decline is largely attributed to rising energy prices and concerns over reduced purchasing power. Consequently, the German savings propensity has climbed to 21.5 points, a level reminiscent of the 2008 financial crisis.
In regulatory news, the Bundestag has implemented a transition rule for the EmpCo directive. This allows companies to continue selling existing stock of goods labeled with environmental claims like ‘green’ or ‘climate neutral’ until September 2028, despite stricter new rules against greenwashing.
Additionally, the Riester pension system is set for a major overhaul. Starting January 1, 2027, a new ‘pension depot’ system will replace the existing model, offering simplified, contribution-proportional state subsidies to the approximately 14.6 million current Riester contract holders.
