Germany faces significant gaps in LDL cholesterol awareness
A representative survey in Germany reveals significant gaps in public knowledge regarding LDL cholesterol levels. Approximately 77 percent of Germans do not know their specific LDL value, despite 86 percent acknowledging that high levels increase the risk of heart attack or stroke. Only 21 percent of respondents identify LDL cholesterol as one of the three most important cardiovascular risk factors, ranking it below high blood pressure, smoking, and obesity.
The lack of awareness is particularly pronounced among young adults, with 43 percent of those aged 18 to 29 having never had their LDL levels measured. This deficit is critical given that cardiovascular diseases were the leading cause of death in Germany in 2024, accounting for approximately 339,200 fatalities.
Scientific research, including a longitudinal analysis from Amsterdam UMC, suggests a link between cholesterol, inflammation markers (such as CRP, IL-6, and TNF-α), and psychological stress. These factors collectively contribute to the progression of atherosclerosis and increased risk of vascular damage.
