Germany faces teacher shortages and training disputes

Educational authorities in eastern Germany are addressing critical teacher shortages through different approaches. In Saxony-Anhalt, Education Minister Jan Riedel has criticized the University of Halle, alleging that an excessive focus on academic subject matter over practical pedagogy and psychology is causing high dropout rates among teacher training students.

The University of Halle has rejected these claims, stating that academic standards are mandated by the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz) to ensure degree recognition.

Meanwhile, in Saxony, the use of teacher secondments (Abordnungen) to fill gaps has increased significantly. The Left party (Die Linke) has criticized this practice, arguing that moving teachers to different schools merely shifts the problem rather than solving the underlying personnel shortage. They advocate for more realistic personnel planning and better incentives to encourage teachers to work in rural areas outside of major cities like Leipzig and Dresden.
