Region Hannover launches 78 apprenticeships amid nationwide vacancy surge

In August and September 2026, the Region Hannover will start 78 trainees in dual studies, apprenticeships, vocational school internships and volunteer services across twelve occupational fields, with the majority in public administration.

Hotel Hübner in Warnemünde begins its new training year with seven apprentices, including two Vietnamese trainees arriving in September, to be trained as cooks and hospitality staff.

North Rhine‑Westphalia’s labour minister Karl‑Josef Laumann reported that more than 34,200 apprenticeship places remain unfilled across sectors such as craft, industry, trade, administration, IT and social services, and highlighted state programmes and €2 million EU‑Social‑Fund support for disabled youth.

The Handwerkskammer Dortmund noted ongoing vacancies despite the start of the new apprenticeship year, citing popular trades like sanitary‑heating‑climate technicians, energy‑and‑building‑electronics engineers and a rise in foreign‑national apprentices.

The IHK for the Munich district said over 500 apprenticeship positions are still open, stressing the value of dual training and digital skills.

Mecklenburg‑Vorpommern’s employment agency warned that roughly 3 000 apprenticeship places, especially in retail, remain unfilled as the new school year approaches.
