Germany faces urgent bridge infrastructure maintenance needs

Germany is facing significant challenges regarding its aging bridge infrastructure. According to the Federal Ministry of Transport, approximately 28,000 bridge components exist within the German Autobahn network, with roughly 8,000 requiring long-term modernization. Specifically, 4,000 of these are located in priority networks and must be addressed within the next decade.

In Karlsruhe, local reports indicate that over 60 percent of bridges date from the 1960s to the 1980s and are in varying states of repair. Some structures, such as the multi-lane bridge on Durlacher Allee, have received low ratings, raising concerns about falling debris affecting roads or tracks below.

To address these maintenance needs, the industry is increasingly turning to hydrodemolition. This high-pressure water jetting technique removes damaged or contaminated concrete while leaving the underlying reinforcement intact and undamaged. This method is considered more efficient, less labor-intensive, and more environmentally friendly than traditional mechanical methods, as it avoids creating micro-cracks and reduces the need for new steel and concrete.
