Germany fish consumption rises to 13.9 kg per capita in 2025

Fish and seafood consumption in Germany saw a significant increase in 2025, marking a reversal of previous years of stagnation or decline. According to data from the Fisch-Informationszentrum (FIZ), per capita consumption rose to 13.9 kg based on catch weight, an increase of 1.6 kg compared to 2024.

Total market volume reached nearly 425,000 tonnes, with consumers spending over 5.1 billion euros. This represents an increase from the approximately 415,000 tonnes and 5 billion euros recorded in 2024. Salmon remains a favorite among consumers, while canned and frozen goods are prominent in the market, with discounters handling much of the sales volume.

FIZ officials noted that fish prices have stabilized relative to other food categories. While overall food prices rose by 31.8 percent between 2021 and 2025, fish prices increased by 27.6 percent, trailing the price hikes seen in dairy, eggs, bread, and meat. Germany's consumption levels currently sit in the middle range of global consumption, significantly behind leaders like Iceland, which averages nearly 84 kg per capita.
